A sound work of art is captivating each time it is viewed. Such a work has the ability to produce an array of responses from the viewer and the gift to form a relationship with them. Through my work I wish to encourage a dialogue about the diversity and hardship of our inter-locking world. The more meaning born in my images, the deeper that dialogue may be. And the hope is that the dialogue will initiate some interest in the larger picture of sexual preference and the work that still needs to be done in society to truly gain equality.
Over the past months I have met with many men who identify themselves as gay but for many reasons choose to be discrete about their identity. This can be due to family pressures, cultural or religious beliefs or even fears of not getting promotions at work or loosing friends. In a society that is now becoming more accepting of difference and laws are being made to accept equality I fear there is still a long way to go to truly become equal.
In this work I have attempted to take a look into the doorways that are open and closed for many men in Spain and across the world. It is a work in progress that has taken a lot of time and encouragement to gain trust that identities will not be revealed but to show the reasons men still have doubt and still need to be discrete.
